In between our first three weeks here, once in a while, we would be going to the river Kolpa to make some preparations for the Kresovanje, which is a yearly tradition all over Slovenia of lighting up bonfires on the 30th of April. In Metlika, this is organized by Kud Plac. In preparation, we cleared up the terrace of an old, empty house beside the river where they will be setting up a bar and barbeque for the event. We cleaned some tables and chairs and gathered up branches for the bonfire – big branches for a really big bonfire –the biggest I’ve seen.
On the day of the Kresovanje, the bar was fully set up and a stage was set for a band to play the music for the evening. People started coming around 3:00 in the afternoon to celebrate this event. There were drinks and later, burgers and falafels for sale to raise money for the organization. The program officially started around 9:00 in the evening with the dance performance by two groups of kids –modern dance by the girls and a breakdance performance by some younger boys. The boys’ dance was taught and choreographed by Alen, the volunteer from Bosnia. Not long after, the band started playing and the bon fire was lit up.
It was so rare to see this many people here in Metlika and it was nice to see them gather around for this annual tradition. Everybody was drinking and socializing, some were singing and dancing to the songs of the band and everybody seemed to be having a great time.
I personally really enjoyed this evening, meeting new people and witnessing how they really look forward to this event and how they celebrate it. It was also special to me because I was spending this with a totally new set of friends (even Cecilia, the other Filipina is a new friend
to me) but I was so comfortable to talk and laugh with them considering our differences and the length of time we know each other. And to be able to make that connection with people on the other side of the world for a time in your life is a really beautiful memory to have. I will always remember that night.
